"From Sea to Shining Sea"
Map Projects

During our unit "From Sea to Shining Sea" we have been learning about the United States. We have learned that a nation consists of its people, laws, and the land. We have learned about the geography of our country and can identify many of the physical features and while in Media we have been researching the human-made features of our country. Ms. Whyte and Ms. Zajac's second grade students each followed directions to create physical feature maps of the United States. We learned that a region is an area with one or more geographic characteristics in common. We identified physical features that help identify regions of the United States include the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Appalachian Mountains, Rocky Mountains, the Great Lakes, and Mississippi River.

Materials Needed:

  • Styropfoam trays
  • Index cards (for the key)
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Mountains = Mini chocolate kisses
  • Gulf = green colored fruit loops
  • Ocean = blue colored fruit loops
  • Great Lakes = 5 gushers
  • Mississippi River = twizzler peelers
  • And lots of frosting!
Teachers~ If you have any additional ways you have completed this project in your classroom please email me your ideas!
